Luis Sardá

In 1984 he received his Master´s Degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), with a specialty in Design, and has been devoted to his career as a designer for 25 years.

His professional experience as a graphic designer started at the prestigious TAU studio in Madrid, where he developed corporate image and identity projects.

In 1987, he moved to Geneva (Switzerland) to develop the Computer Graphics Department at the Swiss firm Authenticolor. He was awarded the first prize in the competition for the image of the 60th Anniversary of the International Motor Show of Geneva. In 1989, he founded the design studio Point de Fuite with Natalie Huguenin; he worked on corporate image and graphic design projects for local and international clients (DuPont de Nemours, Motorola, Palexpo, among others) and won the first prize in the official competition for the poster celebrating the 700th anniversary of the Helvetic Confederation in the Canton of Geneva.

In 1992 he moved to New York City, where he founded with Jan Ralph the graphic and spatial design studio Ralph&Sardá Design, Inc. He designed a series of stamps, publications and interactive audiovisuals for the United Nations, as well as designing and producing exhibitions among which the most noteworthy are the Philatelic Exhibition at the UN Pavilion at the Taejon Expo 93 (Korea); the traveling exhibitions in Japan "Masters of the Arctic" and "Living Earth, Changing World"; the photographic exhibition "World’s Women Today" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York; the exhibition "50 Years of the United Nations" in Grand Central Station New York, and the train-exhibition project "The Peoples´ Train". He also designed the CD-Rom "25 years of the United Nations Environment Programme".

In 1996, he moved back to Spain and set up his studio, CasaHueca, in Ures, Guadalajara. From then on, he has designed and produced projects for both Spanish and international clients, of which the most outstanding are the itinerant exhibition "150 Years of Railway in Spain"; the United Nations Pavilion at the Expo ´98 in Lisbon (Portugal) and at the Expo 2000 at Hanover (Germany); the interior design of several subway stations in Madrid (Campo de las Naciones, Barajas Airport , Hospital 12 de Octubre, Planetario de Madrid y Juan de la Cierva); the Atapuerca exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Madrid; the exhibition "Signs of the Century: 100 Years of Graphic Design in Spain" at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid; the graphic image for 2000, International Year for Culture of Peace, 2002 UN International Year of Cultural Heritage, the 60th anniversary 2005-06 campaign and other UNESCO projects, as well as numerous spatial and interior design projects, stands for trade shows such as SIMO and Fitur, the largest tourism trade show in Spain, and restaurant design for the state-owned hotels Paradores. He designed the stand for the Madrid Region at the World Travel Market in London in 2005. He is presently designing the pavilion devoted to NGOs (Pabellón de Iniciativas Ciudadanas) at the forthcoming Zaragoza International Expo 2008, as well as working on the QUEST! History of Flight Center project in Chesterfield (VA), USA.

In addition to his design work at the studio, he collaborated with the design magazine Experimenta for its special edition devoted to graphic design in Spain. In the summer of 1998, he participated as a lecturer in the course “25 Years of Graphic Design in Spain” at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid summer session in El Escorial. He was Associate Professor in the Project course at the "Istituto Europeo di Design" in Madrid. He was on the panel of judges of the "Diseño Motiva" design competition in Asturias and of the poster competition for "Los Sanfermines" in Pamplona. He acted as co-director of the "Periferia" summer design workshops, Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. In 2004 he lectured on Design in Historic Towns at the summer courses of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Aranjuez campus) and in Lugo.
